Airstaff profile: Mark Grauer

Hometown: Los Angeles, but my heart’s hometown will always be The Monterey Bay Area. There’s no emotional trouble in the world that God and Big Sur can’t heal.

First concert: Sarah Vaughan, Monterey Jazz Festival. What an experience as a young kid. I remember a few drunken people were talking in the audience and she stopped singing…then the band stopped… silence…Sarah resumed singing once the rude few stopped talking. Lesson learned: Silence in powerful.

Favorite food: Italian.

Name one tune that’s in "Recently played" on your iPod: Robert Randolph & The Family Band. "Press On"

Last book read: The Bible…(not religious…just a hopeful human who likes the book, and the love of God)

Last movie seen: Been on a movie hiatus for no particular reason…O.K. I rented Borat to see what all the fuss was about…crude…but a very funny satire on the human condition in the U.S.A.

Current hobby: Raising two boys

Favorite childhood memory about your mother or father: When I was 10, I got to co-pilot with my dad, as we flew across the United States of America. The electrical system went down in this Cessna 182, and we had to make an emergency landing in some little town. We made the headlines in their newspaper!

What makes you laugh? Us. Humans. The silly things we take so seriously…our mutual insecurities and selfish pride, even our spiritual pride is humorous when we take a few steps back and look at things from an eternal perspective. The best comedy deals with serious issues. Laughter is good medicine!

Cats or dogs? Love 'em both. My cat dominates our 127-pound dog. Gotta love the wild kingdom.

What celebrity crushes did you have as a teenager?: GEEEZZZ…This is embarrassing, but I just loved Cher… she used to lick her lips when she sang on ‘The Sonny and Cher Show’…and God forgive me, but as a little kid I used to think…what do you see in him (Sonny)? I could offer you so much more. I was 11. (Not a teenager but close enough)

Latest accomplishment: Designing and building a recording studio with help from my great brothers Lonnie Nix and Ben Joiner.

Why I do what I do: I love producing and doing cartoon/character voices, for humorous reasons.

Oh yeah, and working at KOIT…music is good therapy. I am very thankful to get to share a little piece of people’s lives with them. And I’m thankful for Bill Conway giving me the opportunity to do this. (not brown nosing…I mean it)

My friend Bobby Ocean said it best… He told me that one day, as a young man, he went into a little roadside cafe and saw a lot of depressed, hopeless, people. In the corner there was a radio on and a happy voice pierced the gloom with a positive tone. Bobby thought…"I want to be that guy."

I second that emotion.
