5 Tips to Prevent Summer Pool Deaths For Children

The CDC says that drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4, and the #2 cause for kids 5 to 9. You never think it will happen to your child until it does.
Here are 5 tips to keep your kids safe in the pool this summer.
1. Teach your kids how to swim. The age to teach kids to swim is now 1-years old. If they struggle or are younger than 1-years old, you need to get a preapproved lifevest.
2. Never leave kids unattended in or near water. This means no multitasking while they’re in the water. No books, cellphones, tablets, or magazines. Even if you’re with a friend, don’t look at them while you chat. Always keep your eyes on your kids. The cues for drowning are subtle. They may never splash or cry out.
3. Teach kids to stay away from drains. Bathing suits and hair can get caught and cause them to get stuck under the water.
4. Keep your pool maintained. If you’ve got a pool, use the right amount of chemicals and make sure your filtration system is working properly. When not in use, secure your pool with the appropriate covers. You can even install a gate around it for extra security.
5. Learn CPR. You can find free classes at hospitals, community centers, or by contacting the Red Cross. If there is nothing offered near you, watch a YouTube tutorial like this one:
