Has your dog ever been sprayed by a skunk??

Oh yes, the dreaded skunk smell. Jada, my Pitbull, wasn’t sprayed directly but she rolled around on some grass with skunk spray on it. Thankfully, her coat wasn’t drenched in the spray. I learned that skunk spray is an oil and it is VERY hard to remove. The smell lingers for quite some time. When washing your dog it is best to use gloves as well because as I have also learned (THE HARD WAY) the oil will transfer to your hands!!!
My dog is 55 pounds and I used the following concoction:
1 cup apple cider vinegar
2 cups water
12 ounces vanilla extract
2 table spoons baking soda
I added vanilla extract and baking soda. The original recipe didn’t have that but I decided to add it because it was on some other recipes that people said worked. You may need to make more or less depending on the size of your dog. Please be VERY careful not to get the solution in your dog’s eyes as it WILL BURN! Before putting the solution on your dog make sure to get his/her coat thoroughly wet. Leave the solution on for about 10 minutes. Clean the paws well. I had a little cup with me and dipped her paws one by one to make sure the solution got every nook and cranny. Poor Jada didn’t enjoy it but neither did I or my daughters so at least we were in it together. LOL. I’m always trying to find the positive in situations. Ha! Luckily my daughter helped me with all of this as she has a great way of calming Jada.
We washed out the solution and the skunk smell was SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. I’m going to go home tonight and wash her with it again. I may add a little Dawn dishwing liquid too as I have heard this really cuts the grease/oil of the skunk spray. I’m pretty confident the smell will be gone. I also had to soak her collar and leash in the same solution. I also sprayed her bedding with it too and it was pretty drenched in hopes it will lift the smell out. I have to wash it when I get home.
I also heard tomato juice works and that veterinarians have some kind of spray you can get which is different from Nature’s Miracle skunk spray.
GOOD LUCK!
