This is terrifying!
The FBI says there is a new phone scam going around called, “virtual kidnapping”.
Scammers hack into a phone contact list and use spoofing technology to make you think someone in your contact list is calling you. Their name will show up in the caller ID. Then the scammers will say that person has been kidnapped. They will demand a ransom to release the person.
It feels so real because it looks like the kidnapper is using that person’s phone, but rest assure, that person is fine.
If this happens, hang up the phone & contact the FBI. Then make contact with the alleged victim to make sure they are okay.
