At least 4 people have died and 19 people are injured after a gunman opened fire at about 5:41pm Sunday evening. Victims include Stephen Romero (age 6) , Keyla Salazar (age 13), and Trevy Irby (early 20s).
The Gilroy Garlic Festival was in its third and final day of the 2019 festival when ambulance crews were told people were down in an active shooter incident at Gilroy’s Christmas Hill Park. The festival was supposed to close at 6pm.
The gunman was taken down by police one minute after he began shooting. He cut through a fence to enter into the festival. A band had just taken the stage to start their encore when he began shooting. He has been identified as a 19-year-old Gilroy native. He legally purchased an AK-47 type rifle on July 9th in Nevada and had no criminal history in Santa Clara County. No official motive has been given. Police and FBI are still on the lookout for a possible second suspect.
