Why GivingTuesday is so important
By 965koit on December 2, 2019
This year for GivingTuesday, 96.5 KOIT will be out at UCSF Benioff Children s Hospital in Oakland to raise money for the children that are undergoing treatment there.
It is the second year that I have been a part of it and as I gear up for this exciting event, I realized that I don’t know a thing about GivingTuesday.
What is GivingTuesday?
GivingTuesday started back in 2012 and it’s a global movement to urge people and businesses to assist their communities by giving monetary donations on the 3rd of December every year.
Where does my money go?
Over $400 million dollars has been donated on GivingTuesday since it’s inception! All of that money goes directly to the charity of your choice. Some organizations are even looking for volunteers to pledge hours or donate goods in case you aren’t able to donate any funds this year.
Who can I give money to?
Check out this super easy site that will show you all the local nonprofits in your area that are looking for donations this year.
I will suggest the 96.5 KOIT Cares for Kids Radio-A-Thon because the money benefits local children at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals. But if there is something more dear to your heart, there is sure to be a nonprofit to fill your needs.
How can I make the most of my money?
- Get the timing right: Wait for matches! At the 96.5 KOIT Cares for Kids Radio-A-Thon, businesses will match during certain hours. Be on the lookout for these hours to help maximize your donation.
- Choose the monthly donation option: During GivingTuesday, a lot of charities will ask you to make a monthly donation as opposed to a one-time large donation. While both are great, they would prefer the monthly donation.
- Use social media: Have fun with GivingTuesday! Use social media to post about your favorite charity, share different campaigns or even make a video of you talking about what it means to you. Even if you can’t donate, your social post might inspire others who weren’t planning on donating this year.
