Opera at the Ballpark (Photo Credit: Kristen Flowers)

If this is wrong, I don’t want to be right

Over the weekend, I went to Opera at the Ballpark and watched Romeo and Juliet.

And I ate a huge brownie sundae.

To say this was an amazing experience is an understatement.

I got to see San Francisco Opera’s most popular opera, inside Oracle Park while eating a Creme brownie topped with churro flavored ice cream.

Let’s break down this amazingness.

First off, did you know that Oracle hosts the Opera at the Ballpark?

I knew, but never thought it would be something I would go to. Why would I want to sit in a big empty stadium and squint at the screen trying to make out the grainy footage? It didn’t seem like a fun evening.

But I decided to give it a shot.

I showed up at Oracle on a beautiful Saturday night. The air was buzzing with activity as families arrived with big tote bags filled with blankets and snacks. They streamed into the stadium and ran down to the outfield to layout in front of the enormous jumbotron.

Admission is free so everyone brought the entire family, including the little ones.

I got into the park and was blown away with how packed it already was. The lower levels were starting to fill up as well as the upper tiers.

I was also delighted to see that all the concession stands were open. You can get the Giant’s garlic fries while you watch a fancy show? Yes and yes.

With ice cream in hand, I found a perfect seat right in front of the screen. The lights dimmed and the show began. I was still skeptical at this point about the simulcast from the War Memorial Opera House. How good could it really be?

The curtain lifted and I was blown away. The screen was crystal clear and I saw details I had never notice before at the opera. I was enchanted with Nadine Sierra at Juliet and Pene Pati as Romeo. Their gorgeous voices filled the stadium with the most beautiful music.

I’ve seen several operas in my day, and this by far was the best one.

If you are ever considering seeing an Opera at the Ballpark, do it. Plain and simple, go out and experience this for yourself. It’s a night that you will never forget.
