Lilly’s Birthday Party Dilemma

I can’t believe it, but Lilly is about to turn 1-years-old!

It seems like just yesterday that she was a tiny baby that fit in the nook of my arm.

Now she’s so big I can barely hold her without my arms shaking, and she prefers crawling down the hallway than snuggling with her mama.

After being hospitalized when I was pregnant with her, and after she graduated from the NICU, I knew I wanted to throw her a little party for her birthday.

December 7th falls on a Saturday this year, so it’s a great opportunity to have people over to the house to celebrate my little kiddo.

Yesterday, Nick and I did a little photoshoot with Lilly to get a picture to put on her invitations, and afterward, I realized that this party is happening and I have no idea what I’m doing!

Do I get it catered?

We have the party scheduled from 1-4 pm to coincide with Lilly’s nap schedule, but that’s right around lunchtime. I have to feed people, right? I should probably put out some munchies, but what kind?

Do I create a toy/gift wishlist?

It seems arrogant of me to create an Amazon wishlist, but that the same time, I know I would hate to get someone a gift that they already had. Obviously, gifts are not necessary but if people want to get her something should I have options available for them?

Does the party need to have a theme?

I’ve been seeing 1st birthday parties on Pinterest and it blows my mind to see the effort people are putting into this. I wanted to get balloons, but there is a helium shortage right now, so I don’t know if I’ll even get that! I was going to make her smash cake, but some of the cakes people are giving to their littles are better than some wedding cakes I’ve seen!

Will Lilly even like this?

Of course, she won’t remember it, but will she be so overwhelmed that she cries? We’ve been trying to introduce her to people, but I worry that she is going to freak out and I’m going to spend the whole party in her room playing peek-a-boo.

Will anyone even come?

Let’s get real here. It’s a one-year-old’s birthday party. Will anyone even WANT to come? After surviving this year, Nick and I wanted to do something special to celebrate but does anyone else care enough to want to celebrate with us? Both of the grandmas are coming out for the party, but they might be the only one. I’m asking for RSVPs on her invitation so hopefully, I’ll have a headcount before I figure out the whole food situation.

Obviously, I need help.

What did you do for your child’s first birthday party? What suggestions do you have for me? Let me know in the Facebook in the comments.
