My Addiction Swallowed My Weekend

By 965koit on January 22, 2018

It’s been a long time since I’ve been consumed by anything. My day usually consists of me going to work, going home, watching tv, working a little more and then going to bed. There was a monkey on my back for a long time in my younger years that I thought I had grown out of in adulthood. This weekend proves that I was wrong. My addition is video games.

One video game in particular has sucked me back into the old habits I thought I had given up. For Christmas Kristen got me a brand new Nintendo Switch and I soon after bought Zelda: Breath of the Wind. Since I first popped that cartridge into the gaming system I have been glued to it during every spare moment or lull in my life. This weekend my problem reached new heights as I spent 11 of the 12 hours I was awake in one room, playing Zelda. Occasionally I would get up to use the restroom or grab something to eat but then it was right back to the TV.  Where my cat Killer was happy to spend time critiquing my battle strategies and snoring during the important cut scenes. The thing that sent it over the line for me was my lack of hygene that took place. Before bed Sunday night I realized that I was brushing my teeth for the first time that weekend.

The moment I realize that I was addicted was when I realized I had spent my sleep dreaming I was inside the game. For a brief moment I was the champion of Hyrule taking my sword and shield into battle. The princess Zelda was depending on me to defeat the evil Gannon and bring peace to the Kingdom. I didn’t by the way, I woke up just before the battle commenced.

Its been a really long time since I’ve been so enthralled by a game and it makes me realize how much I could have accomplished in my youth. There were a list of things I needed to get done this weekend and playing Zelda wasn’t one of them. The sad part is that I didn’t really accomplish anything in the game either! I just walked around killing stuff for 2 days slowly edging closer to my ultimate goal.

What I’m saying is that if you are looking for me in the next month or so, you can find me in front of my TV saving the Kingdom of Hyrule.
