Baby Pot-Bellied Pig Available for Adoption!

The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) has a baby female Pot-bellied pig named Lola available for adoption. The pig was surrendered to PHS/SPCA this past March by an owner who purchased her at a flea market in Modesto.
“Lola was surrendered to us on March 17th by a person who could no longer care for her,” said PHS/SPCA Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox. “She also came to us with a case of mange, which was treated with medication, along with loving attention from our staff and volunteers. Lola is now fully recovered and her hair is even starting to grow back.”
Mange, also known as scabies, is caused by mites. These microscopic mites attach themselves to an animal’s skin and burrow beneath the skin causing intense itching and irritation. With proper treatment, the mites can be eradicated.
“Right now Lola is about 15 pounds, but once she’s fully grown she could reach up to 100 pounds or even more,” according to Tarbox. “She’s very friendly and would make a great pet for someone with the space she’ll need to live comfortably. Lola will only be placed with adopters who will keep her as a pet, not a food source.”
Pot-bellied pigs can live an average of 12 to 18 years. Their diet consists of pig pellets, fresh vegetables and alfalfa hay.
Lola’s adoption fee is $25. She was treated through PHS/SPCA’s donor funded Hope Program, which provides animals like Lola a second chance by treating medical and behavior issues. On average, the Hope Program saves the lives of more than 150 animals a month.
