Knives Are Dangerous!

I’ve spent my fair share around knives. Growing up, it’s one of those boy things. I always had a pocket knife and at one point I owned throwing knives and other sharp things. So it’s safe to say that I know my way around knives and I handle them confidently.

That being said, even people who are confident and know how to handle knives safely, can mess up. While cleaning my sharp kitchen knife over the weekend I was also watching TV. My kitchen knives all have wooden handles so they don’t go through the dishwasher. Instead you have to hand clean them which has never been a problem. On my big knife, there was something that had stuck to it and would not come off. I scrubbed and scrubbed and this tiny little speck of food decided to stand it’s ground.

As I was scrubbing and slowly wearing down this stubborn piece of gunk, I glanced up at the TV. My hand slipped off the side of the blade but continued in the scrubbing motion and then BAM. A nice clean cut on the side of my finger all the way to my fingernail. Luckily, it’s not as bad as it could have been and since it was so clean all I had to do was push the now 2 sides together. The bleeding eventually stopped and I won’t need any stitches.

It’s a nice reminder that you still have to be careful with your knives even if you are confident. This isn’t the first time I’ve cut myself but it’s the first time in a long time. So take your time cooking dinner tonight and don’t let yourself get distracted while handling a knife. It only takes a little slip!
