The 4 year project included pier strengthening and the addition of viscous dampers along the 4.5 mile structure designed to absorb the shocks from an earthquake. The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is completely shut down due to falling concrete.

The CHP reports dangerous chunks of concrete are falling from the upper deck down to the lower deck.

There is no estimated time for reopening.  Best to plan an alternative route to get home tonight, you can take Highway 37 or the Bay Bridge instead. Ugh!
