Welcome Baby Lilly!

On Friday December 7th at 7:57am Bing Crosby was singing “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” on 96.5 KOIT. Kristen and I were listening to it in the delivery room while baby Lilly was brought into the world via C-Section. After the first cry was heard from the other side of the curtain, they brought her around for us to see for the very first time and she looked like an angry purple alien baby. Her color resembled one of those Flintstone vitamins we used to eat when we were kids.

After that I was able to go over and see her while they continued to work on Kristen. Slowly she began to turn bright red and the 3 nurses surrounding her on the table were making sure she was warm and that everything was working properly. The placed her on a C-PAP machine to open her lungs and make it easier for her to breathe, then they threw a tiny beenie on her head and she was off! We all went upstairs to the NICU to do some more blood work and testing to make sure everything was in tip top shape since she was 6 weeks early. After about an hour of waiting I was able to go in and see her for a bit but as you can imagine, she was pretty exhausted. So then I went down to see Kristen who was also, very exhausted. After everyone slept for a bit Kristen was finally able to go and see her for the first time around 6pm that night and hold her for the first time.

She was kept on the C-PAP machine until Saturday afternoon when they decided that she no longer needed it. Kristen was able to get more time in because she was more rested and we saw Lilly a few times that day but she was still very sleepy so mostly everyone rested. It wasn’t until Sunday afternoon that I got to hold Lilly for the first time and I was pretty sure I was going to break her. Nothing is more awkward than me trying to hold a tiny baby like she was made of nitroglycerin and could explode at any moment. Did it get easier the longer I held her? Absolutely not. Maybe in a couple months I won’t feel like I’m trying to diffuse a time bomb in a Bruce Willis movie and I’ll feel more like a dad. Who knows?!

Kristen will be coming home Monday and Lilly will most likely need to be in the NICU for at least 2 weeks just to monitor her progress and make sure that she develops correctly. Then we will be able to bring her home and the adventure truly begins!
