A Different Kind of Guard Pet Available for Adoption

The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) has seven guinea fowl available for adoption.  Guinea fowl are known to be excellent guard pets since they are quick to sound the alarm if strangers or unwanted animals come onto the property.  The guinea fowl confusion (official term for a group of guinea fowl) arrived at PHS/SPCA as strays and do not need to be adopted together as one group.

“Guinea fowl are known as the ‘guard dogs’ in the pet poultry world”, said PHS/SPCA Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox.  “We currently have seven guinea fowl available for adoption, but only for people who will commit to keeping them as pets and not to harvest them for meat.”

Guinea fowl can be housed in a set up similar to chicken coops.  They love to perch on high places and unlike chickens they are less destructive since they don’t typically dig or scratch like chickens are known to do.  They also serve as excellent pest control since they love to snack on insects, especially ticks.

“These birds also produce eggs which many people find delicious,” according to Tarbox.  “The needs of guinea fowl are simple.  They need a safe enclosed space to protect them from predators, fresh water and poultry feed.”

For adopters interested in meeting the guinea fowl please call 650-340-7022.  Adoption fees for each guinea fowl will be half off the normal fee.  They will only be adopted to people committed to keeping them as pets.
